President Donald Trump and U.S. Central Command disputed Iran\u2019s claim that the Strait of Hormuz is closed \u201cuntil further notice\u201d after a weekend of strikes exchanged in the region muddled an already tenuous peace agreement.<\/p>\n

\u201cIran does not control the strait. Traffic is flowing,\u201d U.S. Central Command wrote<\/u><\/span> Sunday in a post on X.<\/p>\n

Trump said Sunday that the key waterway is open and criticized Iran for striking a ship in the strait amid negotiations with the U.S.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s open. We bombed the hell out of them last night,\u201d Trump said Sunday on NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet The Press.\u201d \u201cThey agreed to a deal yesterday, a perfect deal for us. No nuclear, no this, no that, no nothing. They gave up everything, and then after that, they left the room, and then within an hour they launched a drone at a ship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran struck a Cyprus-flagged container ship in the strait on Saturday. CENTCOM said it launched<\/u><\/span> retaliatory strikes on 140 Iranian military targets in the region to hold \u201cIranian forces accountable for attacking another commercial ship in the Strait of Hormuz.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran then returned strikes on U.S. allies in the region including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n

Iran had initially agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vesselson Saturday after a tense week of reciprocal attacks in the strategic waterway that is crucial to the transportation of oil and gas.<\/p>\n

The country\u2019s pledge came after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Omani officials met to discuss navigation through the strait \u201cin light of the developments and repercussions arising from recent events,\u201d Oman state media reported<\/u><\/span> Saturday.<\/p>\n

American officials demanded through mediators on Friday that Iran open the waterway and pledge to stop firing on commercial ships. Trump had announced<\/u><\/span> two days earlier that the countries\u2019 June 17 ceasefire agreement was \u201cover\u201d \u2014 escalating the collapse of the \u201cmemorandum of understanding\u201d he\u2019d signed. Regional allies had been working<\/u><\/span> behind the scenes last week toward restoring a truce.<\/p>\n

Iran attacked commercial vessels in the strait last week, prompting the U.S. to revoke<\/u><\/span> a temporary license that permitted Tehran to sell oil. The U.S. also launched two nights of retaliatory strikes intended to \u201cfurther degrade their ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,\u201d CENTCOM said<\/u><\/span> last week.<\/p>\n

An administration official said last week that the ceasefire deal is \u201centirely performance-based,\u201d and that Iran will receive its benefits only if it exhibits \u201cgood behavior.\u201d While at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump also floated punitive plans that included \u201ctaking over\u201d Kharg Island, Iran\u2019s primary export terminal for oil and gas, or reimposing a naval blockade.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, the president claimed<\/u><\/span> that a thousand missiles are \u201cLocked and Loaded\u201d at Iran should the government attempt to assassinate him \u2014 and that the U.S. military is \u201cready, willing, and able \u2026 to completely decimate and destroy all areas of Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran closed<\/u><\/span> the Strait of Hormuz on March 2, days after the United States and Israel began attacking the country. The closure of the strait, which sits along Iran\u2019s southern coast, has become essential leverage for Iran because of the challenges it poses<\/u><\/span> to the global energy market. The country has said the strait, long considered an international waterway, should be under its sole control.<\/p>\n
