In the photo, she stares up and away. Not at the masked men seated in front of her, or behind her, or packed tight to her right, or reflected in the window glass. Not at their shoulder patches, which say\u201cLife – Liberty – Victory.\u201d They\u2019re hidden behind hats and sunglasses and stretchy white masks, clonelike in their uniforms and their numbers. The train hurtles on.<\/p>\n

Her face is unguarded. She doesn\u2019t hide.<\/p>\n

It was Independence Day, America\u2019s 250th birthday. Before the photo, the men marched in the nation\u2019s capital and rallied at Union Station. Some carried upside-down American flags, a symbol of distress.<\/p>\n

After the photo, the woman went to her mother\u2019s house. She didn\u2019t say anything about the masked men. Instead, she told her mom she was going to church and the store, and she\u2019d come right back. She did not come back.<\/p>\n

That quick, her photo was everywhere. And she was gone.<\/p>\n

The image was destined for history books<\/u><\/span>. It defined<\/u><\/span> America<\/u><\/span>. It deserved<\/u><\/span> a Pulitzer Prize.<\/p>\n

Her face flashed on CNN, ABC, MS NOW, as far as the Times of India and Australia\u2019s national newspaper.<\/p>\n

Reuters posted<\/u><\/span> the photo on Instagram at 1:10 p.m. ET on July 4, and over the next week, millions of people saw it.<\/p>\n

A CNN headline<\/u><\/span> read: \u201cWhat the viral image of a Black woman surrounded by white nationalists on the DC metro says about America today.\u201d The NAACP captioned<\/u><\/span> it: \u201cNo Fear. No Retreat. Still Here.\u201d She was called<\/u><\/span> a \u201ccontemporary Rosa Parks\u201d and<\/u><\/span> \u201ca beautiful, powerful woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Jamie Lee Curtis wrote on Instagram: \u201cThis photograph has changed us all.\u201d Flavor Flav responded: \u201cThis is the most historically important photo for today\u2019s times.\u201d<\/p>\n

It joined the iconic images of this fractured decade: A bleeding Trump with his fist in the air. Torches in Charlottesville. Charlie Kirk mid-collapse. QAnon Shaman. Nothing reads the same way to everyone anymore. Not even the flag.<\/p>\n

The look on the woman\u2019s face was quiet resistance or forced stoicism or a survival mechanism or a haunting echo.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce again, a Black woman was captured in a moment where she must confront the worst of America with composure and become the mirror that shows the distance between who we are and who we say we are \u2014 or who we want to be \u2014 as a country,\u201d wrote<\/u><\/span> Errin Haines, editor-at-large at The 19th.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not need to know who she is to know who she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was Ruby Bridges now. She was Anne Moody at the lunch counter. She was the Little Rock Nine.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was us,\u201d wrote<\/u><\/span> Roy S. Johnson for AL.com. \u201cIt showed that we\u2019re all on this crowded train \u2014 some of us minding our own business; some of us filled with hate, fear and insecurity. All of us riding somewhere, just trying to reach our stop, to arrive where we want to be. All riding together.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Washington Post could not locate her, but published<\/u><\/span> her name and age and paraphrased a family member saying she struggled with mental illnesses.<\/p>\n

Her name had already bubbled up online, which led to internet searches, which led to a morass of judgment and assumption. A white nationalist posted an AI-generated video purporting to show the woman pulling down her pants on the train. The video infected comment feeds across social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is this woman being spoken ABOUT,\u201d read a comment on Instagram about the Post\u2019s story, \u201cinstead of spoken TO???\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBernita is on Instagram with some men,\u201d one of her brothers told their mom.<\/p>\n

Roberta Bowlding was stunned. What was he talking about? She searched online. That\u2019s when she saw it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is embarrassing,\u201d she thought.<\/p>\n

She wondered if her daughter had agreed to be photographed. Roberta, 65, worried those scary-looking men might find out where she lived and come hurt them.<\/p>\n

She kept staring at Bernita\u2019s now-viral expression and imagined she might have been thinking, \u201cWho are all these people?\u201d<\/p>\n

She wished her daughter would come home.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Bernita\u2019s older brother, Joseph Bowlding, thought she looked scared. \u201cThat\u2019s my sister,\u201d he said. \u201cI know her face.\u201d<\/p>\n

He saw the Bernita who, as a kid, danced to Michael Jackson. Who played kickball and was good at math and had friends and loved church and wanted to be a nurse.<\/p>\n

Bernita, 33, was a different person now, and they needed to find her. They were upset that the photo existed. Everyone in Roberta\u2019s building seemed to know about her daughter\u2019s viral moment. Roberta didn\u2019t like that.<\/p>\n

People online compared his sister to Rosa Parks but Joseph shook his head. Rosa Parks had agency. She chose to make a stand. His sister was just riding the Orange Line.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey say that \u2018We love you, we got you,\u2019 but the reality is that this woman is homeless,\u201d he said. \u201cAre they willing to sacrifice and say, \u2018Let\u2019s help her get a place?\u2019 Are they willing to do that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more views they get, they\u2019re getting money.\u201d<\/p>\n

A younger brother, Paul Bowlding, wrote on his Instagram story: \u201cIf you see my sister call me asap \ud83d\ude14\ud83e\udd7ajust worried she lost her phone haven\u2019t seen her in a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t understand her. They don\u2019t know how our family feels,\u201d Joseph said. \u201cIt was important to hear the true side of who she really is, instead of just like a fantasy fairytale.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

None of them could reach Bernita. Roberta thought she had lost her phone again and needed help. She usually stays at her mom\u2019s house for a few days, leaves for two or three days, then comes back. Her last words before leaving this time were \u201cI love you.\u201d Joseph let his mind go to dark places. Was she kidnapped? Did one of the masked men hurt her?<\/p>\n

\u201cIf she\u2019s not taking the medicine,\u201d her mom said, \u201cshe\u2019s not herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

How could so many people see the same photo of the same woman, and not see Bernita at all?<\/p>\n

At 8:59 p.m. on July 8 \u2014 three days after they last saw her \u2014 the family reported Bernita Bowlding missing to Prince George\u2019s County Police. She had been wearing gray pants and a green top, Roberta told the police.<\/p>\n

She became case number 26-0036334.<\/p>\n

* * *<\/p>\n

A few hours after Roswell Encina stepped off the train, he saw the photo.<\/p>\n

The woman was alone, just like he had been, and surrounded. There had been a photographer on his train, too. Maybe his photo would hit the internet next.<\/p>\n

He had been listening to \u201cConfessions II,\u201d Madonna\u2019s new album, but turned it off when the men arrived. He didn\u2019t know who they were, but they made him nervous.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh my goodness!\u201d Encina texted his friends. \u201cHere I am in a gingham blue shirt, and red bandana, and blue boat shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He told his friends he was manspreading so the scary men wouldn\u2019t sit next to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod help me,\u201d he typed.<\/p>\n

His only comfort was the Getty photojournalist, whose presence ensured that whatever happened wouldn\u2019t happen in secret. Encina, 56, is the CEO and president of the United States Capitol Historical Society, a nonpartisan nonprofit chartered by Congress \u201cto foster and increase an informed patriotism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Later, when he did see the photo of himself on the train, he thought, \u201cI\u2019m a gay Filipino American. And I look like it.\u201d<\/p>\n

On July 5, at 9:17 a.m., he posted<\/span> it to his public Instagram account of more than 3,000 followers, along with a carefully worded reflection on democracy:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe day after Independence Day feels like the right time to remember that patriotism isn\u2019t about intimidation or fear. It is about having the courage to keep widening the circle of liberty, dignity, and opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The photo of Encina was taken three minutes before the more famous one of Bernita. But the narrative about the photo of Encina was one he wrote himself. When he posted it, he thought about the woman in the other photo. He knew nothing about her, but he suspected he had a certain agency that she might not.<\/p>\n

The cable outlets and commentators would be calling. He could testify that the fear on his face was real.<\/p>\n

* * *<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s talk about that photo,\u201d Kevin DeAnna, a prominent white nationalist and host of the far-right \u201cIdentity Politics\u201d podcast, said days later to Thomas Rousseau.<\/p>\n

Rousseau had led hundreds of Patriot Front members through the nation\u2019s capitol as they chanted \u201cReclaim America,\u201d flexed their biceps and waved. He gave a speech about how those with \u201cAnglo-Saxon blood\u201d are the true Americans and called just about everyone else an enemy. The group posted a video in its encrypted chatroom, which had more than 14,000 subscribers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really goes to show how much people on different sides of the political spectrum live in different worlds,\u201d Rousseau said on the podcast. \u201cPeople on our side can look at that photo and say, \u2018So what? You know, nothing happened to her.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The Black woman on the Metro \u201cwas not accosted,\u201d Rousseau noted. He said he tells his members to give commuters space. \u201cShe has a whole row to herself,\u201d he said. \u201cShe\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rousseau could not be reached by NOTUS, but on the podcast, he chalked up the commentary to \u201cthe liberal sort of, you know, spin on the news.\u201d The virality of the photo had been good for him, he said: Celebrities, politicians and journalists were talking about Patriot Front.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe demonstration,\u201d he said, \u201chad an impact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cheney Orr, the photographer, has thought about what it means to be vulnerable in front of a camera. His first long-term photo essay, published in The New York Times, documented his father\u2019s experience with early-onset Alzheimer\u2019s. He was 21 when his dad was diagnosed, and his intimate photos<\/span> show how the disease stripped his father\u2019s autonomy over the years.<\/p>\n

In one photo, his father relies on a caretaker to shave his face. In another, he brushes his teeth in the shower. In other moments, his father appears disoriented and weak.<\/p>\n

On July 4, Orr was a freelancer working for Reuters. The agency would not allow him to speak to the press, but they interviewed him about the day. Orr and a friend caught up with Patriot Front right as they boarded the train. It was the busiest Independence Day in Metro\u2019s history, and the car was packed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I photographed members of the group, I noticed the woman you see in this image sitting alone among them,\u201d Orr, 35, told Reuters<\/u><\/span>. \u201cI leaned over seated members of Patriot Front, extended my arm, and composed the frame using my camera\u2019s screen.\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t realize it was such a strong photo until later.<\/p>\n

The group dispersed at the New Carrollton station, and Orr lost track of the woman he photographed. He didn\u2019t get her name. In the caption, she is \u201ca commuter.\u201d<\/p>\n

* * *<\/p>\n

\u201cMama,\u201d she called from the porch. \u201cOpen the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was Bernita. Five days after the photo, she was home.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere you been?\u201d<\/p>\n

Bernita didn\u2019t answer. She seemed tired.<\/p>\n

Roberta has asked her daughter if she remembers the train ride. Sometimes she does. She didn\u2019t know the men were white supremacists. She noticed their masks. She said she wasn\u2019t scared. She was not aware enough to be scared. Or defiant. Or resigned. Or anything else people assumed about her.<\/p>\n

Roberta was taking her grandchildren to McDonald\u2019s, so Bernita came along. Once everyone got their food, they sat down to eat and the kids lunged into their Happy Meals.<\/p>\n

Bernita walked toward the door.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u201cNee Nee, come on,\u201d Joseph said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome sit,\u201d her mom said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to go to the store now,\u201d Bernita said. \u201cWe have to go to the store.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust take just five minutes, c\u2019mon,\u201d Roberta said. \u201cJust real quick please.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bernita lingered halfway out the door, carrying her Caramel Frapp\u00e9 and fries.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you show her the picture?\u201d Roberta asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about you in the train,\u201d Joseph told her, pointing at the photo.<\/p>\n

Bernita paused. She glanced down.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Bernita didn\u2019t know that the photo had gone around the world. She didn\u2019t know she was strong and brave and a symbol of our division and a vessel for our fears. She didn\u2019t know that people who didn\u2019t know her thought they knew her. The icon of America wanted to go now. She needed to pace the parking lot, to sit on the curb, to have some quiet.<\/p>\n
