Billionaire Elon Musk likely broke the law when he handed out $1 million checks<\/u><\/span> to voters just days before Wisconsin\u2019s Supreme Court election, a state election board found.<\/p>\n

The Wisconsin Elections Commission, currently split evenly between Democrats and Republicans, voted 5-1 in a closed session last week to refer the complaints to the Brown County district attorney\u2019s office, the commission\u2019s spokesperson Emilee Miklas told the Associated Press<\/u><\/span>. The panel referred two complaints to the Brown County district attorney\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors have 40 days to report back to the commission on whether they will bring criminal charges against Musk for violating election bribery guidelines.<\/p>\n

Musk was heavily involved in an effort to flip control of Wisconsin\u2019s Supreme Court. He and adjacent groups spent at least $20 million supporting the Republican-backed candidate, Brad Schimel, who later lost to Democratic-backed candidate Susan Crawford by 10 percentage points.<\/p>\n

A state government watchdog group filed a lawsuit<\/u><\/span> last June seeking to prohibit Musk from ever offering cash payments again to voters in the battleground state.<\/p>\n

Republican Brown County District Attorney David Lasee did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NOTUS.<\/p>\n
