{"id":1441,"date":"2026-07-21T10:09:05","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T10:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=1441"},"modified":"2026-07-21T10:09:05","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T10:09:05","slug":"will-incoming-progressives-give-hakeem-jeffries-their-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=1441","title":{"rendered":"Will Incoming Progressives Give Hakeem Jeffries Their Support?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>New York\u2019s Brad Lander said he would support House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for speaker if Democrats win back the House \u2014 an olive branch from a candidate expected to become one of Congress\u2019 highest-profile progressives.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=1439\">Democrats Ditch Their Old Pick in a Competitive Arizona Seat<\/a><\/p><p>Lander and several likely members of Congress \u2014 including Melat Kiros, Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez and Chris Rabb \u2014 are part of a group of uber-progressive Democrats, many aligned with the leftist Democratic Socialists of America, who recently won competitive primaries in safe blue districts. The majority of them have <span><u>not committed to supporting Jeffries<\/u><\/span> if Democrats win in November.<\/p>\n<p>Lander\u2019s support for Jeffries, who is a fellow New Yorker, is a tacit admission that the members are willing to give leadership a chance as they\u2019re on the cusp of winning back the majority \u2014 but still he warned that \u201cvoters are fed up with the status quo.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cI look forward to voting for Hakeem to be the speaker of the House,\u201d Lander said in a recent interview with NOTUS. \u201cAt the same time, I want a party and party leadership that can listen to the passion and anger that voters feel and be responsive to it, and that means showing people much more clearly than leadership have so far what we\u2019re fighting for.\u201d<\/p>\n<section>\n<div>\n<h2>\n<span>Trending<\/span>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sen. Their message centered on economic populism \u2014 even when that meant taking on moderate Democrats rather than Republicans.<\/p><p>Now that several of them are on track to easily win in November, the tug-of-war over the Democratic caucus\u2019s center of gravity is about to grow even more pronounced. And many of the people who will be trying to pull it left will be from congressional districts in Jeffries\u2019 backyard.<\/p><p>Landers has previously <span><u>said he plans to support Jeffries for speaker.<\/u><\/span><\/p><p>\u201cThere will be a good opportunity for leadership to create a framework in which we can cut the line as fighters versus folders and show that it will be possible to win the majority in a strong way and to hear what voters are saying about their frustrations and the bolder posture they want to see from Democrats,\u201d Lander, who beat incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman in a primary that attracted national attention, told NOTUS.<\/p>\n<p>Lander said Jeffries called to congratulate him and that the two have continued to talk, along with Jeffries\u2019 team, about how Jeffries envisions progressives working in the next Congress.<\/p><p>When asked for comment, Jeffries team pointed to his remarks at a recent press conference.<\/p><p>\u201cI\u2019ve talked to several of them, and we\u2019ll have more to say about it in the future,\u201d Jeffries told reporters when asked about the winners of the competitive primaries in his home state.<\/p><p>Building new working relationships between drastically different wings of the party isn\u2019t an entirely new dynamic for Democratic lawmakers to navigate. In 2019, after Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley arrived as the \u201cSquad,\u201d the then-new lawmakers had to establish a working relationship with then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi.<\/p><p>They often broke with leadership on marquee votes, including when Omar and Tlaib opposed the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure bill, and several backed primary challenges against sitting Democratic incumbents in the years that followed.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=1433\">Andy Kim\u2019s Big Health Care Pitch: Enroll Every Kid in Medicaid<\/a><\/p><p>Pelosi, who\u2019s retiring, said she has no concerns for Jeffries after November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHakeem is a very unifying force. He\u2019s eloquent. He listens,\u201d Pelosi said in an interview. \u201cHe\u2019s very respected by the members. I was a different kind of voice, and I always had a race, except for my first time. Every single time I had a race. I don\u2019t see that for him. I think he will have a very unified caucus.\u201d<\/p><p>Ocasio-Cortez, who told NOTUS she\u2019s made herself a resource for the incoming members, said she understands the candidates have to listen to their constituents who elected them for change.<\/p><p>\u201cMovement-based candidates don\u2019t just make individual calculations. Movement-based candidates generally try to be \u2014 especially when they\u2019re elected from their communities \u2014 I think they just conference a lot with their communities,\u201d she said.<\/p><p>Some centrist lawmakers, however, are already concerned that the DSA-aligned candidates will use tactics similar to those used by conservatives in the House Republican Conference, whether it be voting down a rule or refusing to back measures supported by moderate Democrats.<\/p><p>Rep. Brad Schneider, chair of the centrist New Democrat Coalition, which has more than 100 Democratic members, argued there should be more attention to the moderate candidates running in battleground races. He argued that candidates like the ones who have beat out incumbents are \u201cnot adding to the Democratic majority\u201d because they\u2019re in already-blue districts.<\/p><p>\u201cI am concerned about the rhetoric when [the progressives] come in and they say, \u2018We are going to take down the rules, take down the speaker,\u2019 and do these things,\u201d Schneider said. \u201cThat just locks it up. We see that with the Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While none of the soon-to-be members of Congress have said they plan to vote against Jeffries, they\u2019re noncommittal about supporting him.<\/p><p>Several progressives said the fear expressed by Schneider is disconnected from reality.<\/p><p>\u201cI think if their fear is simply that these will be people who are more interested in division for its own sake or attention for its own sake, they\u2019ve got something else coming,\u201d said Andrew Bard Epstein, who worked on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s campaign and Valdez\u2019s campaign. (Mamdani <span><u>backed several of the New York progressives<\/u><\/span> on track to win seats in Congress.) \u201cThese are people who are smart and determined and strategic.\u201d<\/p><p>Lander was optimistic that in the general election, once primaries are wrapped up, Democrats will come together to win the majority.
