Maybe Even This Year.\n                    <\/span>\n<\/h3><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>House Oversight Chair <b>James Comer<\/b> (R-Kentucky) said he introduced the measure because he wants to prevent city lawmakers from raising taxes, a step D.C. Council Chair <b>Phil Mendelson<\/b> has said they may take to confront a budget crunch in the coming year, Jenny reports.<\/p><p><b>The twist? <\/b>The bill could also prevent the city from decreasing existing taxes or fees. If it passes, any change to Title 47 of the D.C. code could go into effect only if both chambers of Congress approve.<\/p><p><b>Comer said in a statement<\/b> that tax increases are the true target of the policy.<\/p><p>\u201cCongress must have stronger oversight tools to prevent these job-killing tax hikes, which will drive employers, investment, and residents out of the city,\u201d he told NOTUS. \u201cAnd if pigs ever fly and the DC Council approves tax cuts instead, I\u2019ll be the first to lead the charge for Congress to approve them immediately.\u201d<\/p><p><b>The bill would face<\/b> an uphill battle to overcome the filibuster if it makes it to the Senate. It\u2019s the latest in a series of attempts by Republicans to undermine the D.C. government\u2019s ability to dictate local policy \u2014 and it underscores just how much some watchful eyes on Capitol Hill are scrutinizing the D.C. Council.<\/p>\n<p>Del. <b>Eleanor Holmes Norton<\/b> <span><u>said<\/u><\/span> \u201cthe entire Committee, Republicans included, should be offended by this reckless waste of their time.\u201d<\/p><h2><b>FROM THE DISTRICT<\/b><\/h2><p><b>D.C.\u2019s weather woes<\/b> continue this afternoon, with severe storms likely and \u201ca tornado or two\u201d possible, <span><u>Capital Weather reports<\/u><\/span>.<\/p><p><b>The city is ordering restaurants<\/b> to dismantle their streateries, <span><u>Axios D.C. reports<\/u><\/span>.
