Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) told NOTUS.<\/p><p>Ocasio-Cortez said the DCCC believes that \u201cone type of candidate, or one type of approach, or one type of ideology is what will win in every swing seat in America.\u201d Instead, she said, what the committee needs \u201cto be doing is have an approach that is more tailored and is listening to every community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BeforeGal\u00e1n-Woods lost her race, Maine state Sen. Joe Baldacci <span><u>lost to progressive Matt Dunlap<\/u><\/span> in that state\u2019s 2nd Congressional District, and California Assembly member Jasmeet Bains lost to another progressive, <span><u>Randy Villegas<\/u><\/span>, in the 22ndCongressional District.<\/p><p>To some Democrats, these races illustrate breakdowns in the way the DCCC communicates with its members and allies.<\/p><p>For example, the DCCC failed to inform the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC that it was adding Bains to its \u201cRed to Blue\u201d flagship candidate program before she won her primary, even though the committee had agreed to keep the CPC PAC informed about its decisions, according to multiple sources.<\/p><p>The CPC PAC only found out about the DCCC\u2019s move the day before it was announced \u2014 and only because Villegas heard about it in California and then called the progressive group, which was backing him.<\/p><p>Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Washington), a CPC PAC co-chair, told NOTUS that the progressive group \u201cimmediately set up a call\u201d with DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries after learning about their involvement.<\/p><p>They \u201capologized profusely,\u201d Jayapal said, and \u201csaid it never should have happened that way, it was an oversight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it begs the question of engaging in any Democratic primary,\u201d Jayapal added. \u201cAt a minimum, if they\u2019re going to engage, we need to know if we have a candidate in that race, and we need to have a really thoughtful discussion about it.\u201d<\/p><p>The DCCC did add Villegas to its \u201cRed to Blue\u201d program after he defeated Bains in June, and a spokesperson for his campaign told NOTUS in a statement that since the primary, \u201cDCCC has been extremely helpful in our shared goal of defeating David [Valadao].\u201d<\/p><p>But the miscommunication around the DCCC\u2019s primary involvement came at a time when the CPC PAC \u201cis mobilizing our members to give the most amount of DCCC dues we\u2019ve ever given,\u201d said Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Florida), another CPC PAC co-chair.<\/p><p>If the DCCC doesn\u2019t change its election strategy, it runs the risk of members not paying their dues to the committee. Dues are already being affected by redistricting, which has cut the number of members who pay the party\u2019s campaign arm, as <span><u>NOTUS first reported<\/u><\/span>.<\/p><p>\u201cIt makes you think, \u2018I\u2019m giving my dues to win in November, not for primaries,\u2019 and so you\u2019d think it could discourage members from giving dues,\u201d Frost said.<\/p><p>In a statement to NOTUS, DCCC communications director Courtney Rice defended the group\u2019s involvement in the primaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the DCCC decides to put a candidate in a competitive primary on Red to Blue, it is done after polling and research into different general election match-ups and discussions with Caucus members, local leaders, labor, and other stakeholders,\u201d Rice said. \u201cGiven Democrats\u2019 big tent, there is not always consensus, but the decisions are never made in a vacuum.\u201d<\/p><p>Under the leadership of DelBene, the DCCC has been involved in 10 contested primaries in 2026 and won seven. But the three losses have been high profile enough to take up much of the oxygen, and opened the group to attacks. Republicans\u2019 campaign arm put out a press release Wednesday calling DCCC\u2019s most recent primary loss a \u201chumiliation.\u201d<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=1661\">Trump Expands His Ratepayer Pledge With Republican Governors, Utilities<\/a><\/p><p>\u201cI have complete and total confidence in Suzan DelBene, her leadership of the DCCC, and as a result of that leadership, I\u2019m confident we\u2019re going to take back control of the House of Representatives in November,\u201d Jeffries said at a press conference Thursday when asked about DCCC\u2019s involvement in primaries.<\/p><p>Some members said there\u2019s a desire in the caucus for the DCCC to create more avenues for members to provide feedback to the committee.<\/p><p>Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-California) told NOTUS the DCCC needs to \u201clisten to members from the states where candidates are running to really understand what\u2019s happening on the ground, to understand the local dynamics, and to either support the candidates that are best connected to the community, or to let the dynamics play out in the primary.\u201d<\/p><p>The DCCC, Kamlager-Dove said, holds regular \u201clistening sessions\u201d where members can keep the committee informed about \u201cwhat they\u2019re seeing, what\u2019s happening\u201d in their states.<\/p>\n<p>However, attendance does not appear to be mandatory;when asked if the DCCC seemed receptive to the feedback from those meetings, the lawmaker said, \u201cI couldn\u2019t say because honestly, I don\u2019t join many of them. I stay focused on my own state and how I can be helpful to the \u2018Red to Blue\u2019 candidates that are running.\u201d<\/p><p>Some House Democrats are floating the idea of creating a committee that gives members more say over the DCCC\u2019s decisions. <span><u>Axios first reported<\/u><\/span> lawmakers\u2019 interest in a formal body to give that feedback.<\/p><p>\u201cIt would not be a bad idea for us to really consider what leadership will look like that\u2019s beyond one person,\u201d Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Illinois), an outspoken critic of the DCCC\u2019s involvement in primaries, told NOTUS. \u201cA coordinated approach, a table convening of six or seven members of Congress, that represent different parts of this big tent that can help provide adequate, intentional perspectives as they\u2019re making their decision.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cOne person can\u2019t possibly have the breadth of understanding and the dynamics of what\u2019s happening on the ground,\u201d Ramirez added. \u201cI certainly want to talk about that as we\u2019re thinking about how we move next year.\u201d<\/p><p>The DCCC\u2019s primary election strategy has also been criticized by Democratic candidates.<\/p><p>Joe Caiazzo, a consultant for Dunlap\u2019s campaign in Maine, told NOTUS that the DCCC \u201chas made some decisions this cycle that have been far from ideal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, he added, \u201cas we march towards November, we all need to unify in an effort to win back the House, and I think that there are many competitive races around the country that the DCCC could absolutely come to the table and support to ensure that we are broadening the map.\u201d<\/p><p>While Dunlap painted himself as an anti-establishment candidate during his primary, Caiazzo said Dunlap is still interested in getting the DCCC\u2019s backing \u2014 highlighting how the party\u2019s support remains valuable for the general election.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019re talking to the DCCC, we have a good relationship, and I expect that they will eventually move him to \u2018Red to Blue,\u2019\u201d Caiazzo said.<\/p><p>In a statement released after the Arizona race was called Wednesday, Shah similarly touted his win as a \u201cgrassroots victory where Arizona voters made their voices heard,\u201d adding that the \u201cstatus quo in Washington, D.C., is not working for Arizonans.\u201d<\/p><p>The day before, he\u2019d told reporters that if he won the race, \u201cI\u2019m sure we\u2019ll have a phone call, and I will speak to the DCCC and I hope that I can get their endorsement.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cAny Democratic candidate would want to be on the \u2018Red to Blue\u2019 list,\u201d a source close to Shah\u2019s campaign told NOTUS.<\/p><p>It is unlikely that the DCCC will stop becoming involved in Democratic primaries.<\/p><p>Dan Sena, the DCCC\u2019s executive director in the 2018 cycle, pointed to the <span><u>Maine Senate race<\/u><\/span>, where Graham Platner stepped down as the Democratic nominee after being accused of sexual assault \u2014 which he denies \u2014 as an example of what happens when \u201cyou allow things to just happen without heavy input.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cYou either get involved in the primaries and you win seven out of 10, or you don\u2019t get involved and you come up shy in the majority,\u201d Sena said. \u201cEither way, the Democrats have to ask themselves, wouldn\u2019t you rather have the gavels in your hand?\u201d<br\/><\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=1657\">Trump Sidesteps SCOTUS With New Tariffs<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>House Democrats say the stinging losses could threaten everything from the DCCC\u2019s ability to win in general elections to its ability to collect member dues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1666,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1671","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-2026-election"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
