A panel of advisers partially appointed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is recommending the government expand access to six peptides not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.<\/p>

If the FDA accepts the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee\u2019s recommendations \u2014 which is at odds with recommendations by its own scientists \u2014 select pharmacies could start using these typically gray-market substances in the specialized medications they create for customers, something that is currently illegal.<\/p>\n

An FDA spokesperson said Friday that the agency \u201cappreciates\u201d the panel\u2019s recommendations and will propose a rule the public can comment on, but didn\u2019t provide a timeline. The FDA doesn\u2019t have to accept the panel\u2019s recommendations but it usually does.<\/p>

Peptides, which are typically injected, are chains of amino acids that serve as the building blocks of protein. Some peptides, including insulin and GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, have been heavily studied and approved by the FDA for years.<\/p>\n
