President Donald Trump wants to make a dramatic show of force against Iran \u2014 potentially one that implicates U.S. soldiers in war crimes under international law. And he has consistently been unwilling to back down during internal conversations, sources familiar with administration discussions said.<\/p>

Combined with the Trump administration\u2019s ongoing push to delegitimize the International Criminal Court, one of the global institutions meant to uphold standards for warfare, observers fear the U.S. is rapidly moving to abandon norms meant to shield human rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not the first time the U.S. has gone on a rampage to try and kill the court,\u201d said Rebecca Hamilton, a former International Criminal Court lawyer, who noted that U.S. officials also tried to limit the body\u2019s reach during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. \u201cWhen they\u2019re attacking the court like this, it raises the question of, Why are you so scared of this court?\u201d<\/p>

The U.S. has launched renewed strikes against Iran for 13 days in a row, and Trump threatened on Wednesday to destroy an Iranian bridge or power plant each time Iran strikes a ship attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz. Such an attack could have severe consequences for many civilians, who under international law countries are supposed to shield from military campaigns.<\/p>\n
