Gavin Newsom in August 2025, text message screenshots filed in federal court this week revealed.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=1946\">Trump Administration Wants Millions More to Pay Off Freedom 250 Events<\/a><\/p><p>Two agents discussed the event \u2014 as well as their anxiety over the possibility of violating court orders \u2014 in messages that were among the exhibits submitted Monday by the American Civil Liberties Union in a California federal court. The exhibits also contained numerous incidents of federal immigration agents using <span><u>crude and racist language<\/u><\/span> toward Latinos.<\/p>\n<p>Federal personnel from Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other agencies conducted widespread raids in Los Angeles last summer under Operation At Large, part of the Trump administration\u2019s aggressive mass-deportation push.<\/p><p>The texts between the unidentified federal agents \u2014 one of whom was recognized in court documents as a Homeland Security Investigations special agent, referred to as Agent G.A. in the filings \u2014 offer a candid look into how agents privately viewed their roles in Operation At Large. The agents detained several people and lingered at the scene, sparking a flurry of media coverage.<\/p><p>At the time, DHS <span><u>contended<\/u><\/span> that the operation was about \u201cenforcing the law.\u201d<\/p><div>\n<\/div><p>Newsom <span><u>said<\/u><\/span> in a social media post Wednesday that the released texts prove that the operation was targeted. The governor\u2019s office referred to the posts when asked for comment.<\/p><p>\u201cThis is crazy. I never thought I would actually see anything like this. We got pulled off the HD and car wash to run this stunt,\u201d Agent G.A. wrote that day, referencing sites such as Home Depot where agents would often appear to arrest day laborers and other workers.<\/p>\n<p>The agent claimed they were told to \u201cstand down\u201d while at the press conference.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019re told to assist with targeted enforcement,\u201d Agent G.A. wrote. \u201cThat is not target enforcement. That was just a political agenda. Hopefully I can get replaced soon.\u201d<\/p><p>Agent G.A. wrote to Agent W again on Aug. 15, \u201cI had no interest in going out with BP to Little Tokyo lol.\u201d They said agents just \u201cstood around to get media attention\u201d after marching from a federal building in downtown LA to Newsom\u2019s press conference and arresting a few people.<\/p><p>\u201cWould you have went?\u201d Agent G.A. asked.<\/p><p>\u201cIf I knew what they were doing probably not,\u201d Agent W responded.<\/p><div>\n<div><div>\n<blockquote><p>NEW: Donald Trump\u2019s own DHS agents admitted it UNDER OATH!<br\/><br\/>The president deliberately sent masked, heavily armed ICE agents to target our campaign kickoff on democracy.<br\/><br\/>They terrorized a community. A man selling strawberries was arrested for this disgusting political theater.\u2026<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=1944\">James Comey Accuses DOJ of Lying and \u2018Vindictive\u2019 Prosecution in Seashell Case<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) July 29, 2026<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><p>Agent W brought up Bovino, saying they had heard he was a \u201cgood dude and really good at his job\u201d but at times did \u201cthings like this that are a little out of pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think BP is mostly just excited because they don\u2019t usually get to do this so they\u2019re kind of loving the media attention maybe,\u201d Agent W wrote.<\/p><p>Agent G.A. said in a subsequent deposition interview that he wanted to be removed from Operation At Large because of the controversial operation outside Newsom\u2019s press conference, as well as internal pressure to carry out what he worried were possible violations of a temporary restraining order.<\/p><p>\u201cIt seemed to be pushing into public spaces, you know, more and more frequently,\u201d Agent G.A. told a lawyer during the deposition, which was also included in the ACLU\u2019s court filings. \u201cIt seemed to be escalating to less and less targeted.\u201d<\/p><p>Agent G.A. and Agent W\u2019s conversation in the exhibit spans from Aug. 11, 2025, to Aug. 15, 2025. At the time, a federal district court had issued a temporary restraining order that stopped federal agencies from conducting indiscriminate immigration stops. The Supreme Court later paused that ruling on Sept. 8, 2025.<\/p><p>The federal agents questioned among themselves whether they could be held liable for continuing the indiscriminate stops, despite the restraining order.
