Democrat Al Franken is sitting on a small political fortune \u2014 and he\u2019s preparing to use it.<\/p>\n

Franken, who federal records<\/u><\/span> indicate has more than $1.4 million in leftover cash sitting in his old U.S. Senate campaign account, is \u201clikely to convert\u201d that committee into a political action committee \u201cin the near future,\u201d Al Franken for Senate Treasurer Thomas Borman wrote to federal regulators this week.<\/p>\n

Borman was responding to from the Federal Election Commission about the Franken committee\u2019s \u201csignificant amount of residual cash on hand\u201d and a request to \u201cexplain the committee\u2019s intended use\u201d for the money.<\/p>\n

Franken spokesperson Alexandra Fetissoff confirmed to NOTUS that \u201cSen. Franken has no plans to run for future office but he will continue to do good with his Senate campaign committee.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a PAC<\/u><\/span>, Franken\u2019s Senate committee could overtly raise and spend money for the purpose of electing and defeating political candidates.<\/p>\n

Franken has also maintained a separate leadership PAC from his time in the Senate \u2014 Midwest Values PAC \u2014 that he will continue to use to \u201csupport Democrats up and down the ticket,\u201d Fetissoff said. As of April 30, it had about $458,000 in its account, according to FEC .The former senator from Minnesota resigned<\/u><\/span> his seat in January 2018 following accusations<\/u><\/span> of sexual misconduct. Franken soon came to<\/u><\/span> regret<\/u><\/span> his resignation, saying he wished<\/u><\/span> he had argued against the accusations through the Senate Ethics Committee.<\/p>\n

Franken has since sought to rehabilitate his image and recoup some of his political stature.<\/p>\n

The career comedian has recently appeared on TV and podcasts with Jimmy Fallon<\/u><\/span>, Conan O\u2019Brien<\/u><\/span> and Rich Eisen<\/u><\/span>. He regularly sends fundraising requests on behalf of Democratic political candidates and PACs. He hosts a popular podcast<\/u><\/span> on which he interviews politicians, journalists, writers and political advocates. And last year, he launched his own weekly radio show<\/u><\/span> on SiriusXM radio.<\/p>\n

Franken\u2019s Senate campaign committee has made several charitable donations this year, according to , including $25,000 each to Minnesota-based nonprofits Tending the Soil, UNIDOS MN, UNIDOS MN Education Fund, the Ascension Immigrant Emergencies Fund and CTUL, as well as the Asian American\/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy in California.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not uncommon for former political candidates\u2019 idled campaign committees to hoard hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars for years after they leave elected office.<\/p>\n

Federal law provides several options for the surplus cash: transferring it to other political committees, donating it to charity, disgorging it to the U.S. Treasury or doing nothing with it.<\/p>\n
