{"id":2234,"date":"2026-08-05T05:39:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T05:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=2234"},"modified":"2026-08-05T05:39:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T05:39:11","slug":"missouri-elections-official-blocks-petition-challenging-gop-friendly-redistricting-map","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=2234","title":{"rendered":"Missouri Elections Official Blocks Petition Challenging GOP-Friendly Redistricting Map"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Missouri\u2019s top elections official squashed a challenge to Republicans\u2019 new congressional map that could net them one more U.S. House seat, waiting until the last possible day to block a petition that would have triggered a statewide vote on the gerrymander.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=2232\">HHS Awards Small Texas Firm With $150M Contract to Represent Unaccompanied Children<\/a><\/p><p>Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins, a Republican, on Tuesday rejected petitioners\u2019 attempt to put the map on the ballot in November ahead of the deadline to decide whether the petition could advance, saying the challenge itself was \u201cunconstitutional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt issue is not the number of signatures turned into the challenge, the new congressional map, but the fact that the referendum itself is null and void by virtue of the fact that it is unconstitutional,\u201d Hoskins said at a Tuesday press conference. \u201cTherefore, House Bill 1, the Missouri First map, continues to be the law of the land.\u201d<\/p><p>Hoskins also said that Gov. Mike Kehoe and Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway agreed with his choice. Emanuel Cleaver\u2019s heavily Democratic district, becoming one of the first states that moved to redistrict after President Donald Trump pushed state lawmakers to redraw their congressional maps to more heavily favor Republicans.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=2231\">Max Miller Says Mike Johnson Is \u2018Standing Behind Me\u2019<\/a><\/p><p>Signed into law by Kehoe last September, the map carves Missouri\u2019s largest city, Kansas City, into three congressional districts.<\/p><p>Shortly after the assembly pushed the new lines through last fall, People Not Politicians Missouri gathered over 300,000 signatures to force a referendum. In Missouri, a petition with enough signatures triggers a veto referendum, or a statewide vote on the law in question.<\/p><p>The group filed the signatures in December. Hoskins had until 5 p.m. Tuesday to decide on the legality of the petition \u2014 the same day as Missouri\u2019s primary elections.<\/p><p>Hoskins was widely expected to not certify the signatures, previously saying that any signatures gathered before the campaign was approved by his office constituted \u201c<span><u>a misdemeanor election offense<\/u><\/span>,\u201d a claim his office later <span><u>clarified and corrected<\/u><\/span>.<\/p><p>\u201cSecretary of State Hoskins is making a last desperate attempt to silence the people\u2019s voice in Missouri,\u201d Richard von Glahn, executive director of People Not Politicians Missouri, wrote in a statement. \u201cWe\u2019ve fought back against politicians for the last year, and we won\u2019t stop now.
