Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins joined Democrats early Saturday morning to vote against his confirmation. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) was still absent following his <span><u>release<\/u><\/span> from a rehabilitation facility earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<p>Blanche took over as acting attorney general after the president <span><u>ousted Pam Bondi<\/u><\/span> in April. But his full promotion to the country\u2019s top law enforcement post was dubious after Republican holdouts took issue with the IRS\u2019s <span><u>settlement<\/u><\/span> with Trump that gave him and certain family members immunity from tax audits and created a $1.8 billion \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund that could pay out those who felt they had been wronged by the federal government, including Jan. 6 riot participants.<\/p>\n<p>Blanche\u2019s critics grilled him over the course of his confirmation process for his <span><u>handling of files<\/u><\/span> related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and whether he\u2019d remain an <span><u>enforcer<\/u><\/span> of Trump\u2019s agenda, which has included <span><u>attempted indictments<\/u><\/span> of the president\u2019s opponents. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina) initially took issue with the IRS settlement provisions, threatening to block Blanche from advancing out of the Senate Judiciary Committee unless he delivered written assurances to quell their concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Their <span><u>impasse broke<\/u><\/span> once Blanche complied with Cornyn and Tillis\u2019 demands to nix the fund and limit the immunity\u2019s deal scope, though the document\u2019s enforceability is still in question, as is whether he will uphold it now that he has been confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=2365\">D.C. Wins Fight Against Trump Administration Over Voter Rolls<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trump, who once employed Blanche as his personal lawyer, repeatedly <span><u>suggested<\/u><\/span> throughout the senators\u2019 blockade that he would pull the nomination and leave Blanche as acting attorney general if he did not have enough votes, or wait until Tillis and Cornyn exited Congress next year.<\/p>\n<p>Collins and Murkowski said they would vote <span><u>against<\/u><\/span> him in statements. The deciding factor came down to outgoing Sen. Bill Cassidy (R\u2013Louisiana), who defended Blanche in a floor speech hours before the chamber was set to vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Blanche is not perfect, and he will tell you this.\u201d Cassidy <span><u>said<\/u><\/span> Friday. \u201cBut the choice is not between perfection and Mr. Blanche.
