The Senate overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan measure funding federal agencies until mid-December early on Saturday morning,putting Congress on track to avert a government shutdown in October and kicking funding negotiations until after the midterm elections.<\/p>

Senators voted90-6 to approve a bill that extends current funding levels through Dec. 11, with some exceptions. Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee, told reporters that the measure is a positive step after a number of government shutdowns over the past year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that we all want to make sure that we have good funding through Dec. 11 and hopefully we\u2019ll be able to negotiate good bills once the elections are over,\u201d Murray said.<\/p>

The Senate\u2019s stopgap funding bill, though, is different from the version the House passed in July. The Senate measure includes a provision Democrats demanded that would delay a Trump administration rule<\/u><\/span> putting political appointees in charge of issuing grants.<\/p>\n
