This week, both the law firm and the Office of Refugee Resettlement backed away from <span><u>the no-bid contract<\/u><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were approached by the Trump administration to fill a gap in legal services and we were considering how we might help,\u201d Burke Law Group <span><u>wrote<\/u><\/span> in a Tuesday statement addressing \u201cfalse reporting\u201d about its involvement, adding that the firm was \u201conly considering applying for a small portion\u201d of the $150 million contract.<\/p><p>The ORR is the Health and Human Service Department\u2019s branch tasked with facilitating legal services for unaccompanied minors. Two profiles on the site were later updated to include \u201cimmigration and asylum\u201d as specialties after initial reports about the contract were published.<\/p><p>Founder and managing partner Marcella Burke worked in President Donald Trump\u2019s first administration, serving as deputy general counsel in the Environmental Protection Agency before moving to the Department of the Interior,<\/p><p>\u201cThe new firm has zero immigration lawyers, but is now trusted to represent 20,000 immigrant kids,\u201d Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) <span><u>posted<\/u><\/span> on X last week. \u201cCorruption \u2014 and you\u2019re paying for it.\u201d<\/p><p>The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, a refugee resettlement group and existing grantee, will provide legal services through the end of the year, ORR said. The group began providing legal representation for the agency on Aug. 5.<\/p><p>The federal government previously worked with Acacia Center for Justice, through which its legal teams, the organization said, had defended more than 20,000 children. Nonprofits recently sued HHS, alleging the government had stopped paying Acacia even though it still had a contract.
