News cycle after news cycle brought Democratic tea parties, campaigns imploding under scandal, tests of <b>Donald Trump<\/b>\u2019s endorsement power, debating the importance of TV ad buys, learning who <b>Hasan Piker <\/b>is, polling-pocalypses and all other the fun (or: \u201cfun\u201d) stuff the primaries have been about. Just make sure you call it salient. Surveys show <span><u>over<\/u><\/span> and <span><u>over<\/u><\/span>: Voters want to know how their electeds will make things cheaper.<\/p><p>Politicians are more clued into this than some might think. Before they left town, NOTUS\u2019 Manuela Silva asked senators the one word they thought would define the election. \u201cEconomy,\u201d said Sen. <b>Thom Tillis<\/b> (R-North Carolina). \u201cAffordability,\u201d said Sen. <b>John Curtis<\/b> (R-Utah). \u201cCosts,\u201d said Sen. <b>Amy Klobuchar<\/b> (D-Minnesota).<\/p><p>\u201cGas,\u201d said Sen. <b>Roger Marshall<\/b> (R-Kansas). \u201cI can\u2019t say, \u2018cost of gas\u2019?\u201d We\u2019ll allow it.<\/p><p><b>Shifting the conversation to prices is crucial <\/b>to any midterm strategy. Democrats say they can do it easily, pointing to drama-free unity rallies and the surge of voters turning out for all types of Democrats this year as evidence they can put messy primaries behind them quickly. Besides, a good deal of primary season ads were about prices. But it was sometimes quite nasty out there, with ideological purity tests dominating many races. Can all that be back-burnered until the party\u2019s traditional circular firing squad returns to prominence, 30 seconds or so after the November polls close?<\/p><p>Republicans have a different challenge: the toll of the Iran war and how much voters don\u2019t like it. \u201cWe get a lot of calls about it into the office. They\u2019re just wearing out on it,\u201d Sen. <b>Shelley Moore Capito <\/b>(R-West Virginia) told <span><u>NOTUS\u2019 Al Weaver.<\/u><\/span> \u201cThey don\u2019t want to see boots on the ground. Massachusetts Sen. <b>Elizabeth Warren<\/b> has worked on a slew of bipartisan populist legislation co-sponsored by the likes of Republican Sens. <b>Josh Hawley<\/b> of Missouri and <b>Bernie Moreno<\/b> of Ohio \u2014 not generally seen as among their party\u2019s ideological squishes, <span><u>NOTUS\u2019 Avani Kalra reports<\/u><\/span>. \u201cWe have a great work relationship,\u201d Hawley said about Warren.<\/p><h2><b>From the White House<\/b><\/h2><p><b>Karoline Leavitt\u2019s exit: <\/b>The president\u2019s press secretary says she\u2019s leaving the gig for greener pastures. That kicked off a round of D.C. gossip reasoned speculation about who might take the briefing-room lectern next. One person close to the White House told <span><u>NOTUS\u2019 Jasmine Wright<\/u><\/span> that her replacement would almost certainly come from outside and not from the current press office.<\/p><p><b>Running the numbers: <\/b>The White House misrepresented and exaggerated a recent crime report to overstate the impact of last summer\u2019s federal intervention in four cities, <span><u>NOTUS\u2019 Ben T.N. Mause reports<\/u><\/span>. The White House cited a Council on Criminal Justice report to say drops in homicides were most pronounced in cities where Trump has surged federal agents.
