{"id":2688,"date":"2026-08-18T19:08:35","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T19:08:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=2688"},"modified":"2026-08-18T19:08:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T19:08:35","slug":"preservation-group-urges-the-supreme-court-to-stop-trumps-ballroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=2688","title":{"rendered":"Preservation Group Urges the Supreme Court to Stop Trump&#8217;s Ballroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The National Trust for Historic Preservation asked the Supreme Court on Tuesday to block the Trump administration\u2019s ballroom construction while a legal challenge to the project plays out in court.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=2686\">DOJ Plans to Deploy a \u2018Historic Number\u2019 of Midterm Election Monitors<\/a><\/p><p>The  is in response to an <span><u>application from<\/u><\/span> the Trump administration last week that asked the court to lift a <span><u>lower-court ruling<\/u><\/span> that would halt work Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach court to examine the question has agreed that [the administration has] no unilateral legal authority \u2014 constitutional, statutory, or otherwise \u2014 to build a massive ballroom on the site of the now-demolished East Wing,\u201d the filing says. \u201cAnd each court has told [the administration] in no uncertain terms that they must stop their illegal construction unless and until they receive express approval from Congress.\u201d<\/p><p>The National Trust argued that it and the public will suffer irreparable harm if the court lifts the injunction. The administration previously estimated that construction would continue for roughly two more years.<\/p><p>The National Trust offered an expedited legal process to offset the administration\u2019s concerns about a delay that would include Supreme Court oral arguments over the ballroom construction as soon as October.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=2684\">Trump Administration Moves to Axe Protection for Undeveloped National Forests<\/a><\/p><p>The filing says that a few weeks of delay for \u201ca project that will not be complete for years is far outweighed by the irreparable harm of the completion of a structure at the White House that Petitioners themselves assert will be \u2018virtually impossible to deconstruct.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Should the court uphold the injunction, work could still continue on the underground military facility. A federal appeals court in D.C. stopped construction of the ballroom, but not the military complex that would exist beneath it.<\/p><p>That court ruled the ballroom couldn\u2019t be built without congressional approval, which the administration has <span><u>tried and failed to obtain<\/u><\/span>.<\/p><p>In its application to the Supreme Court last week, the administration argued that the ballroom project \u2014 described in the filing as an \u201cintegrated military complex\u201d that is \u201crequired for national security\u201d \u2014 was necessary for the safety of the president, his family and administration staff.<\/p><p>Although the project\u2019s initial description included a secure ballroom for events on the White House grounds, its scope has broadened into a drone hub with military infrastructure and facilities for the Secret Service.<\/p><p>President Donald Trump has continued to say that the entire project will be built by private donations.
