{"id":2872,"date":"2026-08-21T21:11:46","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T21:11:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=2872"},"modified":"2026-08-21T21:11:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T21:11:46","slug":"trump-administration-proposes-major-change-to-law-school-accreditation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=2872","title":{"rendered":"Trump Administration Proposes Major Change to Law School Accreditation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>An Education Department <span><u>staff report<\/u><\/span> recommended that an independent body with historic ties to the American Bar Association be stripped of its ability to accredit law schools, a spokesperson for the federal agency confirmed Friday.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=2868\">Liberal Think Tank Refuses to Retract Report After Trump\u2019s $5B Lawsuit Threat<\/a><\/p><p>The report, which was released just a month before the powers given to the ABA\u2019s accreditation council are set to come up for review, comes after President Donald Trump and other leading conservatives criticized the ABA as \u201cwoke\u201d and took issue with its past embrace of certain policies <span><u>they decried<\/u><\/span> as \u201cdiversity, equity and inclusion.\u201d The ABA has also <span><u>clashed<\/u><\/span> with the White House over the federal government\u2019s targeting of law firms and attorneys after Trump returned to office last year.<\/p>\n<p>The ABA consists of two separate, but technically independent, branches that serve as an accreditation body and a professional membership group for attorneys. The accreditation council, which has accredited law schools since 1952, has <span><u>maintained<\/u><\/span> that its operations, office space, budget, membership and policies are separate from the ABA.<\/p><p>But the administration has taken issue with the accreditation council\u2019s ties to the ABA, with Education Department staff arguing that the group is \u201cout of compliance with the agency\u2019s accreditation regulations and recognition standards\u201d because it had not sufficiently proved it is \u201cseparate and independent\u201d from the process to remove the council\u2019s accreditation power because it is \u201congoing and involves multiple stages of review, including by an independent, bipartisan advisory committee in September.\u201d<\/p><p>David Barker, assistant education secretary, told <span><u>The Wall Street Journal<\/u><\/span> that the agency has maintained that \u201caccreditation, in general, operates The Lawmaker Blames a \u2018Clerical Error.\u2019<\/a><\/p><p>\u201cWhen there\u2019s no competition, accreditors feel free to inject their own political preferences, their own ideologies into the work they do,\u201d Barker said.<\/p><p>Melissa Hart, chair of the accreditation council, said in a statement that the group was confident it met federal requirements for accreditors.
