Mayor Muriel Bowser has <span><u>indicated<\/u><\/span> that this \u201cfirst ever\u201d race could be \u201cfollowed by second and third,\u201d but she will be out of office come January. The city handled some repaving ahead of the race, according to <span><u>The Associated Press<\/u><\/span> \u2014 though Penske, the transportation services giant, is footing most of the bill for the Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>Bud Denker, president of Penske Corporation who\u2019s also chairing the race, hasn\u2019t committed to holding future events in the District.<\/p><p>\u201cIt is the first ever,\u201d Denker said, according to the AP. \u201cIt might be the only.\u201d<\/p><p>Trump has touted the race he says nothing can \u201cever top\u201d as part of the wave of events that took over the capital this summer, including the <span><u>UFC fight<\/u><\/span> at the White House and the <span><u>Great American State Fair<\/u><\/span> on the National Mall.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=2910\">Johnson\u2019s Political Future May Hinge on Republicans Exceeding Midterm Expectations<\/a><\/p><p>Denker has said the cost of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix \u201cfar exceeds\u201d Penske\u2019s roughly $22 million budget for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix.<\/p><p>\u201cWell, we\u2019re in Detroit, and Detroit\u2019s a $21-$22 million budget. This far exceeds that,\u201d Denker told <span><u>NBC4<\/u><\/span>.<\/p><p>Denker said Penske is paying \u201cthe vast majority of this bill\u201d but some of the funds are coming from sponsors he\u2019s setting up in suites near the race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a break-even operation, and we didn\u2019t intend it to be,\u201d Denker added.<\/p><p>To convert downtown D.C.\u2019s streets into a high-speed track for 25 racers to traverse 250 miles around and around the 1.7-mile loop, Denker said about 49 manholes had to be outfitted with silicone covers so the speed of the IndyCars can\u2019t suck the plates out of place.<\/p><p>Denker praised the roads\u2019 condition, saying they\u2019re in \u201cpretty good shape,\u201d but some of the track needed fixing to the tune of just under $3 million.<\/p><p>Freedom 250 and Penske did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NOTUS.<\/p><p>Trump took an <span><u>honorary lap<\/u><\/span> around the track ahead of Sunday\u2019s race, as U.S. military planes, including the jet that is normally designated Air Force One, conducted flyovers.
