{"id":295,"date":"2026-06-09T17:41:36","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T17:41:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=295"},"modified":"2026-06-09T17:41:36","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T17:41:36","slug":"congress-watchdog-finds-major-lapses-in-oversight-at-ice-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=295","title":{"rendered":"Congress\u2019 Watchdog Finds Major Lapses in Oversight at ICE Facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>Congress\u2019 watchdog identified serious oversight problems at the country\u2019s largest immigration detention center, including unsanitary conditions and inadequate tuberculosis screenings and health assessments.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=293\">Democrats Keep Losing Voters in Swing Districts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A new Government Accountability Office  follows an Immigration and Customs Enforcement inspection that found dozens of safety violations at Camp East Montana.<\/p>\n<p>Three immigrants have died at the tent detention center near the Fort Bliss Army base in El Paso, Texas, since it opened in August. City officials also reported two cases of tuberculosis and 18 COVID-19 cases earlier this year, <span><u>The Texas Tribune<\/u><\/span> reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cICE did not identify these issues because it did not inspect the facility prior to housing detained noncitizens there, as required by ICE policy,\u201d the report states. \u201cAfter the facility opened, ICE reported additional problems, including gaps in medical services, the loss of a loaded firearm, and unsanitary conditions, among other issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In March, the Trump administration <span><u>dumped the contractor<\/u><\/span> it had hired to run the facility, Acquisition Logistics LLC, which didn\u2019t have experience operating detention centers before landing the $1.3 billion contract.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=291\">Democrats Argue Backing Platner Isn\u2019t Like Backing Trump<\/a><\/p>\n<p>ICE repeatedly warned the contractor about problems, including a document in February that said evidence associated with the homicide of <span><u>Geraldo Lunas Campos<\/u><\/span> was missing or destroyed, according to the GAO report. ICE\u2019s investigation of Campos\u2019 death is on hold because of an ongoing criminal investigation.<\/p>\n<p>A security guard at the detention center also lost a loaded gun in January that hadn\u2019t been found as of March. ICE documented the contractor\u2019s inadequate weapon control.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic lawmakers Sens. Jack Reed (Rhode Island), Gary Peters (Michigan), and Dick Durbin (Illinois) and Rep.
