A new coalition of D.C. groups and activists has a message for Republican members of Congress: If you mess with us here, we\u2019ll mess with you on your home turf.<\/p>

The coalition \u2014 known as Defend D.C. \u2014 says<\/u><\/span> it will spearhead and supercharge efforts to send city residents into surrounding states ahead of the November midterm elections, with the purpose of supporting Democratic challengers and help flip at least the House of Representatives, if not also the Senate.<\/p>\n

Proponents say the push to influence the outcome of the elections stems from the reality that D.C. \u2014 a federal district with no voting representation on Capitol Hill \u2014 is often at the mercy of Congress, and that the Republican majority that has controlled it over the past 20 months has more aggressively interfered with the city\u2019s local affairs.<\/p>

\u201cCongress has used its power over D.C. to attack us. So Washingtonians are banding together to use our collective power to change Congress,\u201d said Robert White, an at-large D.C. Council member who is also the Democratic nominee for the District\u2019s nonvoting delegate to Congress, at a news conference Monday. \u201cWe are going to where the votes are. When politicians somewhere else believe they can come into our city and take away our rights without consequences, then we will go into their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n
