Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth favors Sean Parnell to become the next Army secretary, according to two former Pentagon officials, but the Pentagon spokesperson would probably face a tough path to Senate confirmation.<\/p>

Hegseth is considering Parnell to succeed Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, who is reportedly weighing a departure<\/u><\/span> from the Pentagon in the coming weeks. The former officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private conversations, confirmed a report in The Hill<\/u><\/span> that Parnell is short-listed for the role.<\/p>\n

Parnell is a decorated Afghanistan veteran, former congressional candidate and trusted Hegseth adviser, but his partisan political profile, combative posture toward the press<\/u><\/span> and past domestic abuse allegations<\/u><\/span> \u2014 which he denies<\/u><\/span> \u2014 could complicate any confirmation effort.<\/p>

\u201cIt would be a difficult confirmation process, and you\u2019d have to want to volunteer to have that all gone through in the public,\u201d a third former Pentagon official said. \u201cYou\u2019re going to revisit all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
