The nation\u2019s top military officer said the Pentagon has no plans to send troops to polling places or use military personnel to seize election materials during November\u2019s midterms, offering Democrats their clearest assurance yet that the armed forces will stay out of elections.<\/p>

Gen. Dan Caine, the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made the commitment in a letter, released Monday<\/u><\/span>, to Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Michigan), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.\u2028The Associated Press was first to report on Caine\u2019s letter<\/u><\/span>.\u2028<\/p>

\u201cThe Joint Force has no plans to send Federal military personnel or Federalized members of the National Guard to polling places during the 2026 elections,\u201d Caine wrote. \u201cLikewise, the Joint Force has no plans to use such personnel to seize ballots, voting machines, or other election-related material.\u201d\u2028\u2028<\/p>

Caine also said he had \u201cneither received nor anticipate receiving any unlawful order\u201d concerning the military\u2019s role in the elections and stressed that \u201celection administration and security remain the fundamental responsibility of state and local officials.\u201d<\/p>\n

The response comes after months of concern<\/u><\/span> among congressional Democrats that President Donald Trump could use troops or federal law enforcement around polling places. Trump has not ruled out sending National Guard troops or immigration agents to voting locations, and in January said he regretted<\/u><\/span> not sending the guard to seize election equipment after the 2020 election.<\/p>

Slotkin had asked Caine and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for written assurances about the military\u2019s role in the election. Hegseth has not responded, according to Slotkin\u2019s office, despite a deadline last week.<\/p>\n
