Each time he\u2019s tried to climb the political ladder beyond his seat in the House of Representatives, Rep. Seth Moulton has pitched himself as someone who can usher in the Democratic Party\u2019s next generation.<\/p>

And each time \u2014 including in Tuesday\u2019s Massachusetts Senate Democratic primary, in which voters picked Sen. Ed Markey over Moulton \u2014 voters have rejected him.<\/p>\n

Moulton, who arrived in Congress by beating a nine-term incumbent, was oncepart of a rising class of young(ish)Democrats styling themselves as the next generation leaders of their party. He was part of a failed effort in 2018 to oust Nancy Pelosi as the top Democrat in the House Democratic Caucus, arguing that<\/u><\/span> \u201cOur party is changing, our country is changing and our leadership should change, too.\u201d His bid for president in 2020 \u2014 which kicked off with, \u201cThe greatest generation saved our country from tyranny. It\u2019s time for our generation to step up and do the same\u201d \u2014 fell short.<\/p>

In his campaign against Markey, Moulton declared<\/u><\/span>, \u201cI\u2019m running against the senator\u2019s decision, after 50 years in Washington, to run for another term at age 80.\u201d<\/p>\n
