Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for Senate in Michigan, said he is \u201cdeeply committed to the safety of the Jewish community\u201d after apologizing<\/u><\/span> for past comments linking a terrorist attack on a synagogue earlier this year to a greater cycle of violence.<\/p>

\u201cI felt the need to apologize, and apologize clearly and directly, for the pain that I might have caused,\u201d El-Sayed said on the latest episode of the On NOTUS podcast. \u201cWe can disagree agreeably that my commitment to Palestinian self-determination does not come at the cost of Jewish safety, and where my words obfuscated that, I needed to correct that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, a man crashed a car into a synagogue in a Detroit suburb and began shooting, injuring a security guard, before being killed in a shoot-out. The attacker was identified as a naturalized U.S. citizen from Lebanon who had lost relatives in an Israeli airstrike in his native country a week before.<\/p>

In a video condemning the attack, El-Sayed said that \u201churt people hurt people\u201d and that \u201cviolence is a cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n
