As expected, Talarico\u2019s Republican opponent <span><u>jumped<\/u><\/span> on the comments as another example of the Democrat\u2019s \u201cradical\u201d views, continuing to bank on the chance that his past views might scare off voters still on the fence.<\/p><p>\u201cI think it\u2019s been commonly recognized from the beginning that Talarico was going to have to answer for those comments and that it was going to be a persistent line of attack from Republicans,\u201d Jim Henson, the director of the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin, told NOTUS.<\/p><p>Henson, who has analyzed Texas politics for decades, thinks Talarico\u2019s comments are an effective example of the emerging Democratic \u201cescape plan,\u201d where candidates use the economy to qualify their earlier positions.<\/p><p>\u201cYou can\u2019t disavow all those positions, but one thing Talarico is good at is speaking in reasonable terms about things,\u201d Henson said.<\/p>\n<p>Some progressive Democrats have tried to distance themselves from positions they took in the political landscape of 2020 \u2014 a watershed presidential election year defined by the COVID-19 pandemic and fervent social justice movements focused on police brutality \u2014 while still maintaining left-wing positions like curbing military aid to Israel.<\/p><p>Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) <span><u>popularized the term<\/u><\/span> \u201cWoke 1.0\u201d \u2014 though she noted that she was <span><u>quoting<\/u><\/span> New York City Council member Chi Oss\u00e9 \u2014 when she called the pandemic-era period \u201ccrazy\u201d in an interview with ABC News last month.<\/p><p>The term has come to encompass a variety of progressive policy positions made by statewide candidates before they had national aspirations, including Talarico, a state representative whose Austin-area district <span><u>skews<\/u><\/span> Hispanic and younger. Some Democratic strategists think Talarico has been able to effectively bridge the gap between his previous positions to adjust to the current political landscape.<\/p><p>\u201cThe sort of \u2018Woke 2.0\u2019 of it all \u2014- to the extent that it exists \u2014 is going to be rooted in these causes around universality,\u201d Tr\u00e9 Easton, vice president for public affairs at the Searchlight Institute, a center-left think tank, told NOTUS. Broader issues like health care access or energy and housing prices are now on the table as the party\u2019s left flank shifts its focus away from identity-based issues.<\/p><p>\u201cAll that said, I do think it\u2019s good that it\u2019s happening, but, you know, the damage to the party\u2019s brand remains,\u201d Easton said.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=3408\">Trump Is Planning a Midterm Travel Blitz to Alaska and Other Battlegrounds<\/a><\/p><p>As Republicans try to leverage culture war issues \u2014 which aren\u2019t necessarily <span><u>top of mind<\/u><\/span> for most voters \u2014 Democrats running statewide or who hold 2028 aspirations still run the risk of being caught up by past comments, strategists warn.<\/p>\n<p>Someone like Ocasio-Cortez, one of the progressive movement\u2019s most influential members, has also tried to <span><u>put some space<\/u><\/span> between herself and \u201crhetoric in that time\u201d \u2014 especially as speculation about her <span><u>own presidential prospects<\/u><\/span> looms. But some centrist strategists think the party\u2019s brand and credibility have more \u201cdamage\u201d through which they need to work.<\/p><p>Centrist think tank Third Way is known for working with more moderate Democrats, said Lanae Erickson, the senior vice president for social policy, education and politics. But the organization has been engaging with a \u201cmuch broader ideological set of players\u201d over the past two years, she told NOTUS, including progressives that have realized \u201cthe places that the advocacy groups were taking them was going to be an electoral dead end.\u201d<\/p><p>While several candidates, including those affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America, have been able to balance their past firebrand remarks from several years ago with <span><u>new or updated positions<\/u><\/span>, those running statewide like Talarico have more pressure to appeal to a wider audience than someone running for the U.S. House or other district-based races.<\/p><p>For example, Michigan\u2019s Democratic Senate nominee, Abdul El-Sayed, has had to tread a precarious line on <span><u>past comments<\/u><\/span> about 9\/11 in a tight battleground state race against former Rep. Mike Rogers, facing criticism that has intensified in part because of his Muslim faith.<\/p><p>\u201cI think all of us look back and say, \u20189\/11 was an awful thing that happened in this country,\u2019 and I think all of us also look back and say, \u2018Think about all the wars that were fought and how much safer do we feel like they made us?\u2019\u201d El-Sayed told CBS Detroit on Monday when asked about the post.<\/p><p>Francesca Hong\u2019s <span><u>narrow loss<\/u><\/span> to David Crowley in Wisconsin\u2019s Democratic gubernatorial primary served as another warning sign this cycle after the progressive candidate\u2019s campaign faced a string of unearthed posts calling to \u201ccancel <span><u>Thanksgiving<\/u><\/span>\u201d or \u201cdefund then abolish\u201d <span><u>the police<\/u><\/span>, who \u201cexist to uphold white supremacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hong <span><u>walked back<\/u><\/span> these comments and more, but in the end, some Democratic primary voters in the swing state may have found it difficult to adjust to her new positions, strategists say.<\/p><p>\u201cI think you can only disavow so much before you just start looking disingenuous,\u201d Easton said, speaking broadly about all Democratic candidates.<\/p><p>As Talarico distances himself from past comments this week, the Democrat has tried to distinguish himself from Paxton by <span><u>calling out<\/u><\/span> his decision to wear a $41,000 watch at a recent campaign stop.<\/p><p>But the question remains whether those types of attacks are really \u201cgoing to move voters,\u201d Henson told NOTUS.<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s likely to help remind Republicans that they shouldn\u2019t even consider voting for James Talarico because he\u2019s just a \u2018woke wolf in moderate sheep\u2019s clothing\u2019 or something,\u201d Henson said. \u201cBut beyond that, I just don\u2019t think it does them a lot of good, and I don\u2019t think the Talarico campaign has to spend an enormous amount of time on it.\u201d<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=3406\">New Jersey Takes Its Fight Against Kalshi to the Supreme Court<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democrats like Texas\u2019 James Talarico are still grappling with their past \u201cwoke\u201d comments, as Republicans capitalize on what some see as a bygone era of politics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3411,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3414","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-democrats"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
