Since the pandemic, the D.C. Board of Elections has been mailing every registered voter a ballot ahead of every election, and voters seem to have embraced voting from home. He\u2019s ordered the U.S. Postal Service to increase its scrutiny and handling of mail ballots, prompting warnings and litigation from some groups that say the plan will <span><u>create chaos<\/u><\/span> \u2014 and potentially disenfranchise many voters.<\/p><p><b>\u201cUntil we hear otherwise, we\u2019re proceeding as we otherwise would,\u201d<\/b> says <b>Monica Evans<\/b>, the director of the D.C. elections board. She tells NOTUS that continued uncertainty as to whether Trump\u2019s plan will come to fruition won\u2019t interrupt the work her office has to do to mail out more than 450,000 ballots to D.C. voters at the end of September.<\/p><p><b>\u201cBeing in elections, we\u2019re used to being flexible,\u201d<\/b> she adds. \u201cSadly, it\u2019s one of the things the powers that be don\u2019t understand: There\u2019s lead time to anything, so you can\u2019t waive a magic wand and do something. There are some processes you can\u2019t just undo.\u201d Evans says D.C. has already paid a vendor to handle mail ballots for November; should Trump upend those plans, the city cannot recoup that money.<\/p><p><b>The main concern from some quarters<\/b> is that USPS <span><u>just wouldn\u2019t be able<\/u><\/span> to do what it\u2019s been charged with, including creating master lists of voters who are permitted to get mail ballots. Evans shares that worry. \u201cI have no earthly idea how USPS is equipped with maintaining accurate registration data that is real-time and current,\u201d she says.<\/p><p><b>For now, all Evans can hope for<\/b> is a final answer on how November\u2019s elections will be conducted. \u201cThings are changing almost daily,\u201d she says. \u201cEvery morning I am checking my email to see where we are.\u201d<\/p><h2><b>FROM THE DISTRICT<\/b><\/h2><div>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>The Kennedy Center has removed a famous outdoor sculpture<\/b> from its grounds, the latest in a series of changes made as part of Trump\u2019s takeover of the storied arts institution, <span><u>NOTUS\u2019 Avani Kalra reports<\/u><\/span>.<\/p><p><b>Ward 8 council member Trayon White is speaking out ahead of his upcoming trial <\/b>on federal bribery charges. \u201cI feel really good and encouraged about my trial. I\u2019m in good spirits. \u2026 I trust my legal team,\u201d he said in a <span><u>video<\/u><\/span> posted on his Instagram account.<\/p><p>White also encouraged D.C. residents to answer jury summonses, arguing that while the District is plurality Black, those numbers aren\u2019t reflected on city juries. \u201cI can\u2019t do this without getting the opportunity to have a jury of my peers. I\u2019m not going to say that all Black people support me, all non-Black people do or don\u2019t,\u201d he said. \u201cI want to make sure those in my community &#8230; take this very seriously.\u201d<\/p><p><b>D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb is suing <\/b>a prominent and well-connected local developer over what he says are <span><u>\u201cshocking\u201d<\/u><\/span> conditions at a residential building in Northeast. Schwalb <span><u>is asking<\/u><\/span> a court to order the developer, <b>Buwa Binitie<\/b>, to make immediate repairs at Delta Pearl on Florida Avenue Northwest and offer restitution to residents.<\/p><p><b>A sports-centric game plan: <\/b>In a news conference Wednesday, Mayor <b>Muriel Bowser <\/b>and Destination D.C. \u2014 the city\u2019s official marketing organization \u2014 said they expect a crowded slate of major sporting events will breathe new life into the District over the next year, NOTUS\u2019 Shamira Muhammad reports. The city will host the NFL draft in April, and officials expect around 1 million visitors. The District will also host the National Women\u2019s Soccer League final in November and men\u2019s college hockey Frozen Four in the spring.<\/p><p>The hope is that these events will create business and jobs.
