{"id":3648,"date":"2026-09-06T16:37:58","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T16:37:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=3648"},"modified":"2026-09-06T16:37:58","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T16:37:58","slug":"trump-administration-asks-the-supreme-court-to-lift-block-on-mail-in-voting-regulations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=3648","title":{"rendered":"Trump Administration Asks the Supreme Court to Lift Block on Mail-in Voting Regulations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>President Donald Trump\u2019s administration on Sunday asked the Supreme Court to intervene after a federal judge barred new mail-in ballot policies ahead of the midterms.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=3646\">Witkoff and Kushner Hold \u2018Encouraging\u2019 Talks in Ukraine After Putin Sit-Down<\/a><\/p><p>This <span><u>appeal<\/u><\/span> marks the third time the Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court to uphold the president\u2019s efforts to overhaul regulations aimed at restricting voting by mail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBallots have already begun to be mailed in North Carolina, and more States will begin the mailing process as the injunction remains in place,\u201d Solicitor General John Sauer said in the filing.<\/p><p>\u201cOnce those ballot envelopes enter the mailstream, there is no retrieving them,\u201d Sauer continued. \u201cAnd while the injunction allows the Postal Service and the States to continue taking steps to ensure that their envelopes satisfy the Rule\u2019s requirements, &#8230; The Supreme Court previously  to the new regulations on procedural grounds last month.<\/p><p>The latest appeal to the high court involves legal challenges from voting rights groups as well as 23 states and the District of Columbia.<\/p><p>The Trump administration argues that some of the changes, like new federal design and barcodes for ballot envelopes, \u201cbuild on practices the Postal Service has long recommended.\u201d<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhomejournals.com\/?p=3644\">Rep. Jamie Raskin Opens Investigation Into Howard Lutnick and His Former Firm\u2019s Tariff Dealings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>With less than 60 days until Election Day, some states, which have the congressional authority to administer elections, argue that the Trump administration is trying to exert improper control in the process.<\/p><p>But the filing asserts that states still have control over the administration of elections while the U.S. Postal Service has the \u201clongstanding authority\u201d to adopt the rules and regulations \u2014 which include comparing mail-in ballots with a list of eligible voters determined by a list submitted by each state.<\/p><p>\u201cWhile the States have primary authority to regulate the manner of elections, they cannot choose to use the federal mails to carry out their elections but then insist that their election-related mail is somehow exempt from the Postal Service\u2019s rulemaking authority, conferred by Congress, to regulate envelope design and addressee information,\u201d Sauer wrote Sunday.<\/p><p>The high court\u2019s decision would have profound impacts on the upcoming election if the Trump administration prevails. Nearly one-third of all Americans voted by mail in 2024, generating more than 48 million votes, according to the <span><u>States United Democracy Center<\/u><\/span>.<\/p><p>Even Trump frequently votes by mail and <span><u>did so<\/u><\/span> ahead of Florida\u2019s primary elections in August.
