Josimar \u201cVozinha\u201d Dias catapulted onto the world\u2019s stage with seven saves Monday in his World Cup debut as the underdog Cape Verde team played to a scoreless draw with powerhouse Spain. One thing put a damper on the day for the 40-year-old goalkeeper: His mother couldn\u2019t afford the visa fees to travel to watch her son play.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s expected to change before Vozinha\u2019s next game. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Wednesday he worked with the State Department and FIFA to waive the fees, and travel arrangements were underway to get Ana Candida Evora to her son\u2019s next match.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo mother should miss the chance to see her child make history,\u201d Jeffries said in a statement, pointing to Vozinha\u2019s \u201cepic performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mother and son are expected to reunite in Miami ahead of Cape Verde\u2019s Sunday match against Uruguay, Jeffries said.<\/p>\n

Evora watched Cape Verde\u2019s Monday match from home on the island off Africa\u2019s coast. because she was unable to get a visa. Cape Verde is on a list of 50 countries that are subject to $15,000 visa bonds. The Trump administration enacted the enhanced fee for Cape Verde in January as part of an effort to crack down on travelers overstaying their visas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe amount [of the visa bond] is determined at the time of the visa interview,\u201d according to the State Department\u2019s website \u2014 though the information page<\/u><\/span> also notes that the \u201cAdministration will waive the visa bond requirement for\u202fcertain individuals traveling to the United States for the FIFA World Cup 2026\u2122.\u201d<\/p>\n

The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on issuing a visa for Vozinha\u2019s mother. FIFA, the Confederation of African Football and Cape Verde\u2019s National Football Team also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n

Evora, a 59-year-old house cleaner, told Reuters<\/u><\/span> she is \u201cvery proud\u201d of her son.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said that no ball would enter his goal, and that is exactly what happened,\u201d Evora said.<\/p>\n

The 2026 World Cup wasn\u2019t just Vozinha\u2019s debut; it\u2019s his country\u2019s first appearance in the premier international soccer tournament.<\/p>\n

\u201cCape Verdeans in America and throughout the diaspora have been celebrating the underdog grit and resilience of the Blue Sharks, joined by soccer fans from nations throughout the globe,\u201d Jeffries said.<\/p>\n

Vozinha gained millions<\/u><\/span> of followers after Monday\u2019s match, going from 50,000 Instagram followers to more than 12 million in just days.<\/p>\n
