Concerts by nine musical acts on the National Mall were announced Wednesday as part of the 250th anniversary celebration of the country\u2019s founding. Just a day later, however, at least three of the announced artists have said they would not perform, with two of them mentioning President Donald Trump in their announcements.<\/p>\n

While the concerts at the \u201cGreat American State Fair\u201d and other events for the celebration are being organized by Freedom 250, a nonpartisan group, rapper Young MC said artists weren\u2019t made aware of the political involvement of the organizers. Trump has repeatedly touted the celebrations and his involvement in planning them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI HAVE INFORMED MY AGENTS THAT I WILL NOT BE PERFORMING AT THE FREEDOM 250 EVENT,\u201d the \u201cBust a Move\u201d rapper wrote<\/u><\/span> on Facebook. \u201cThe artists were never told about any political involvement with the event. And despite the claims by the organizers that the event is non-partisan, Spin magazine describes it as \u2018Trump-backed.\u2019 I hope to perform in D.C. in the near future at an event that is not so politically charged.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morris Day and The Time, a Minneapolis funk group, were the first to drop out.<\/p>\n

\u201cContrary to rumors,\u201d Day said in a Wednesday post<\/u><\/span>, \u201cMorris Day & the Time will not be performing at the \u2018Great American State Fair.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s A No For Me,\u201d Day added in the post\u2019s caption.<\/p>\n

Freedom Williams, of C+C Music Factory, was also quick to post<\/u><\/span> a seven-minute video in which he said he does not \u201cfuck with Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williams also claimed he was unaware of the association with Trump at the time he booked the show. In the video, he recounted going back to his agent and saying, \u201c\u2018You didn\u2019t say nothing about Trump. You didn\u2019t mention Trump.\u2019 \u2026 So I told my agent, \u2018Yeah, no, I ain\u2019t gonna be able to do that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Williams responded to the backlash from the event by also saying the day he lets people tell him what to do is the day he \u201cdies\u201d and that he \u201cjust might\u201d still do the show.<\/p>\n

The other artists announced \u2014 Martina McBride, Vanilla Ice, Bret Michaels, Flo Rida, Milli Vanilli\u2019s Fab Morvan and the Commodores \u2014 are still expected to perform.<\/p>\n

The White House referred questions about the event to Freedom 250. Rachel Reisner, a spokesperson for Freedom 250, reiterated the organization\u2019s nonpartisan status in a statement to NOTUS.<\/p>\n

\u201cFreedom 250 is focused on our signature celebrations and events that honor our history and engage all Americans \u2014 welcoming all who share our goal of commemorating this milestone in a way that uplifts and unites America,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The artists\u2019 withdrawals sparked discussion about the political nature of the events, but Freedom 250\u2019s CEO, Keith Krach, previously stressed that the organization is nonpartisan, though he\u2019s also said that Trump created the organization.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Donald J. Trump pledged that our nation\u2019s 250th birthday would be celebrated in a way worthy of our history, our values, and our future,\u201d Krach wrote<\/u><\/span> on the homepage of his website. \u201cTo help realize that vision at national scale, he launched Freedom 250 \u2014 the nonpartisan organization created to lead this historic effort.\u201d<\/p>\n
