Rep. Tom Kean \u2014 the New Jersey Republican who has for months eluded reporters, his neighbors and the speaker of the House alike, citing a mysterious medical condition \u2014 was spotted at his home in New Jersey on Wednesday, The New York Times reported<\/u><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Kean, dressed in a suit and tie, briefly spoke to a reporter but declined to answer questions. His aides said last week that he will return<\/u><\/span> to Congress, where he has missed more than 100 votes<\/u><\/span> since March, on June 30. It is unclear whether Kean will address his medical condition that day if the House leaves Washington early for recess.<\/p>\n

Representatives for Kean did not immediately respond to NOTUS\u2019 request for comment on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The saga of Kean\u2019s disappearance from public view<\/u><\/span> has vexed Washington insiders and constituents alike following a trail of cryptic statements left by his staff.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no cameras where Tom is,\u201d Kean\u2019s chief of staff Dan Scharfenberger told the Times<\/u><\/span> in May.<\/p>\n

During his absence, Kean won the Republican primary for New Jersey\u2019s 7th Congressional District uncontested, and picked up President Donald Trump\u2019s endorsement<\/u><\/span>. The race is rated a toss-up by The Cook Political Report<\/u><\/span> and is a top target for Democrats in the midterms.<\/p>\n

Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot who will face off against Kean in November as the Democratic nominee, criticized Kean\u2019s monthslong silence, calling him a \u201ccoward.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are failing us, and you do not deserve to represent us in Washington,\u201d Bennett said in her victory speech<\/u><\/span> earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Even Speaker of the House Mike Johnson did not know much about Kean\u2019s disappearance, though the situation worsened Johnson\u2019s chances at passing legislation with a narrow Republican majority.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t even know the details, and, you know, I have to respect that it\u2019s a member\u2019s personal privacy on whatever matters they\u2019re dealing with,\u201d Johnson told reporters in May.<\/p>\n

Kean has released few public statements since his last public appearance in March. On June 2, the day of New Jersey\u2019s primary, Kean said he is \u201cmore energized than ever\u201d and \u201cfocused on his recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kean said in an April statement<\/u><\/span> that he anticipates he will make a complete recovery from his illness and \u201creturn to a full schedule and be at 100 percent.\u201d He then told the New Jersey Globe<\/u><\/span> in May that the medical issue will not affect his cognitive health.<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand the need for transparency on this matter and I look forward to sharing my experience with the public,\u201d he wrote in a statement posted to X<\/u><\/span> earlier this month.<\/p>\n

Kean has said he was doing \u201cvirtual work\u201d over the last few months. The congressman has introduced legislation<\/u><\/span> and seemingly approved staff trips<\/u><\/span>, while first-person<\/u><\/span> social media<\/u><\/span> posts<\/u><\/span> have appeared on his accounts.<\/p>\n

Kean also bought and sold shares of eight different stocks over three weeks in March while he remained missing from the Hill, according to a NOTUS review of congressional financial disclosures<\/u><\/span>.<\/p>\n

The transactions total $50,008 to $190,000 and include shares of Amcor, Chubb Limited, First Citizens BancShares, Johnson & Johnson and PepsiCo. (Federal lawmakers are only required to disclose the value of their trades in broad ranges.)<\/p>\n
