Several floors inside the Pentagon are on lockdown Thursday, after “sophisticated systems to ensure the safety of the building and its occupants” flagged an air quality issue.

“Those systems have detected an air quality issue necessitating precautionary measures until we determine its significance. The Department is executing standard protection protocols, including a shelter-in-place order for the affected area. Response teams are in place and ready to support building occupants,” Sean Parnell, a Pentagon spokesperson, said in a statement.
Some Pentagon personnel in the seven-floor building have been evacuated, CNN reported.

The Arlington County Fire Department said it sent units to the scene, including the hazardous materials team, to aid the Pentagon Force Protection Agency.
“ACFD units, including our Hazardous Materials Team, are currently operating at the Pentagon in support of PFPA’s Hazmat Team during a hazardous materials incident,” ACFD said in a post on X.
